Alla Antsis and Gulay Ozdemir, Founders, have redefined this role through their dedication to both technical excellence and the promotion of diversity within the industry.
With a background in architecture and extensive experience in managing complex construction projects, Alla has not only mastered the craft but also championed inclusion in an industry traditionally dominated by men. Her journey to becoming an important player in the construction sector is marked by perseverance and a commitment to creating opportunities for professionals from underrepresented backgrounds.
In this cover story, we explore how Alla’s background, leadership style, and commitment to diversity are guiding WBE NYC’s steps toward establishing a meaningful presence in the construction industry.
The USA Leaders: WBE NYC has established itself as an important player in the construction industry, focusing on diversity and inclusion. Can you share the inspiration behind its founding and what differentiates WBE NYC from others in the field?
Alla: WBE NYC was founded to address the need for greater diversity and inclusion in the construction industry. While working with developers, I met Gulay Ozdemir, who shared a similar vision. Together, we launched WBE NYC—an owner’s representation firm committed to creating a platform where talented professionals, including women, can thrive and make a meaningful impact. We are also proud to hold the NYC Woman Business Enterprise Certification.
At WBE NYC, we act as the owner’s advocate throughout the entire lifecycle of a construction project—from conception and design to construction and project closeout. The role is essential in ensuring the project aligns with the owner’s vision, budget, and timeline.
What sets us apart is our distinct blend of technical expertise across law, architecture, and construction. We combine this with agility and innovative thinking, which enables us to spot opportunities and resolve challenges effectively. We don’t see ourselves merely as project managers; we are strategic partners fully invested in our clients’ success.
The USA Leaders: Given the inherent complexity of construction projects, how does WBE NYC help clients navigate these challenges while ensuring successful outcomes?
Alla: Our clients typically include multi-family private and nonprofit developers, as well as real estate investors engaged in renovations or new construction. These projects involve multiple teams, intricate processes, and significant investments. Their main challenges often involve navigating regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance, managing project budgets, resolving issues that arise during construction, and keeping all teams aligned with the project schedule.
As Owner’s Representatives, we protect the owner’s interests by serving as the central point of contact and coordinating efforts between the owner, design team, contractors, and other stakeholders. Our core services include project planning, budget management, schedule coordination, risk mitigation, contract negotiation, and quality control. Each project is unique, so we tailor our services to meet the specific needs of our clients, ensuring alignment with their goals and vision.
The USA Leaders: Could you share how your background and experiences shaped your role in owner representation?
Alla: My journey began with a courageous escape from the oppressive USSR in 1979. Arriving in America with little more than a suitcase, I felt a deep calling to help others achieve the American dream by building homes.
I studied architecture at Kiev National University of Construction and Architecture, which gave me a strong foundation in both architecture and engineering. This education provided me with the expertise to excel in the field. Early in my career in the U.S., I had the privilege of working for several world-renowned architectural firms. These experiences helped me refine my design skills and expand my professional network.
Later, I founded Antsis Design Inc., focusing on consulting services for architectural firms and offering owner representation for non-profit developers. In 2013, I joined a large general construction company, which was a pivotal moment in deepening my understanding of construction complexities.
My career continued to progress with some of the nation’s leading housing real estate developers, where I took on more strategic roles. This allowed me to further hone my expertise in owner representation, client management, and coordinating multi-disciplinary teams.
The USA Leaders: As the CEO of your company, what does your typical day look like, and how do you balance your responsibilities?
Alla: As the CEO, my role involves balancing various responsibilities to ensure the company runs smoothly and continues to grow. My day is dynamic, featuring a mix of strategic tasks, such as identifying new business opportunities and developing partnerships, alongside overseeing ongoing projects. I also regularly check in with my team members to provide support and guidance.
Additionally, I engage directly with clients to ensure our services align with their expectations. Balancing these responsibilities requires the ability to adapt to shifting priorities effectively.
The USA Leaders: How do you measure the success and impact of your services, and can you share a success story that illustrates your approach?
Alla: We measure success by focusing on key outcomes such as project delivery on time and within budget, maintaining quality, adhering to scope, and ensuring client satisfaction. Some of the main metrics we track include client retention, change order management, safety, and compliance records.
One of our success stories is the Ayza Wine & Chocolate Bar project. We took on an advisory role during the pre-construction phase, collaborating with the client’s planning, design, and construction teams. Our goal was to fast-track the renovation and minimize operational downtime. This strategy allowed the restaurant to retain staff and limit revenue loss during a challenging period.
Our relationship with Ayza has flourished beyond the project’s completion. We continue to foster a sense of community, bringing clients to the venue to share in the success and enjoy the inviting atmosphere we helped bring to life.
The USA Leaders: What challenges have you faced as a woman in a male-dominated industry, and how have those experiences shaped your leadership?
Alla: Founding my firm has been one of the most rewarding challenges of my career. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, I had to overcome biases and work hard to establish credibility. However, by consistently delivering exceptional results, I built a reputation that helped dispel initial skepticism.
While finding female mentors was challenging, I actively sought out supportive networks and communities. One significant moment came in 2018 when I was invited to serve as a panelist at CUNY Law School. There, I discussed how legislation can advance diversity in construction. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to fostering a more supportive environment for women in the industry.
Throughout my career, I’ve remained dedicated to continuous learning through professional development and certifications. Each challenge and success has contributed to my growth as a leader and a professional.
The USA Leaders: How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance in such a demanding industry?
Alla: Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential for success, especially in construction. For me, it’s about managing time, setting boundaries, and being intentional with personal moments.
I recharge by staying grounded, spending quality time with loved ones, and nurturing my passions. Travel helps me disconnect from the fast pace while staying active supports mental clarity and health. Painting courses at the Art Students League enrich my perspective and fuel creativity, which I bring to everything I do.
The USA Leaders: What are WBE NYC’s future goals and how do you plan to achieve them?
Alla: We are excited about the opportunities ahead and look forward to the next chapter for WBE NYC. Our future goals center on purposeful growth, innovation, and maintaining excellence in delivering value to our clients and the communities we serve. We aim to expand both geographically and in the range of services we offer.
Moreover, we are positioning ourselves to provide specialized expertise in energy-efficient design, sustainable construction practices, and green certifications. By partnering with sustainability experts, we aim to guide clients through these complex areas.
The USA Leaders: What key message would you like to share with those aspiring to make an impact in the construction industry?
Alla: If I could leave one key message, it would be the importance of perseverance, vision, and embracing diversity. Success often comes from staying true to your values, being persistent, and continuously learning.
For those looking to make an impact, I encourage you to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. The construction industry thrives on fresh perspectives and innovative thinking. Take risks, advocate for your ideas, and remember that your unique voice is valuable.
For women, your presence is powerful and essential. Don’t let barriers limit your potential. Support one another. Together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable future.
