Metro Detroit Youth Day is celebrated to unite a community as well as bring peace and tranquility to Detroit. This Youth Day was first celebrated 40 years ago and it aims to inspire Detroit’s young people to do well in the community. Since then, this day has been a great way to channel children’s energies in a positive and constructive manner.
An event, that brings thousands of Metro Detroit’s kids together for food, games, and fun will return to Belle Isle on Wednesday, 13 July 2022. The duration of this event will be 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. After a 2-year break due to the pandemic, this free-of-charge festival will include participant children from ages 8 to 15.
A Decision that Brought Peace
The idea behind this Youth Day was to bring peace to the Detroit community as it saw the adverse effects of arguments in 1980 between young Detroiters and local retailers. Uniting young leaders, the then-mayor, Coleman Young, requested to resolve the issue and calm the tensions. At the request of the Mayor, Edward Deeb, President, Chairman, and Founder of Metro Detroit Youth Day, met the retailers and urged them for more understanding.
This resulted in the creation of Metro Detroit Youth Day in collaboration with Tom Fox and Jerry Blocker to show the youth that local retailers and businesses care for them. The day invites young people from all walks of life to the celebration that includes sports, fun, games, and constructive activities. To date, this initiative has drawn nearly 2 million youngsters to enjoy this colorful event.
Vibrant Culture Celebration
Edward Deeb expressed his thoughts on the prime objective of the event, “The main goal was to inspire our youth to do the most good”. He also added, “We want them to become our future citizens, our future executives in the business world, and to help… cut out all the fighting and the rioting.”
According to the statements by Deeb, the event is expecting more than 30,000 participants this year. This vibrant cultural celebration includes a free breakfast, an Air Force plane fly-over during the kickoff, a pie-eating contest, sports clinics, singing, dancing, and other entertainment. This event is constantly evolving and will surely make an impact on youth to do good for society.
