Christopher Hopper: The Solar Visionary

Solar energy is one of the most promising sources of renewable energy in the world. It has the potential to provide clean, abundant, and affordable power to millions of people and businesses while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. However, designing and installing solar systems is not an easy task. It requires complex engineering, accurate simulation, and efficient workflow management. That’s where Aurora Solar comes in. Aurora Solar is a leading software platform that enables solar professionals to design, sell, and deliver high-quality solar projects faster and easier. Founded by Christopher Hopper and Samuel Adeyemo, two Stanford graduates who experienced the challenges of solar design firsthand, Aurora Solar aims to transform the solar industry with cutting-edge technology and innovation.

From Student to Entrepreneur

Christopher Hopper has always been passionate about renewable energy and sustainability. He grew up in Switzerland, where he was exposed to the beauty of nature and the importance of environmental protection. He studied mechanical engineering at Imperial College London, where he co-founded e.quinox, a student-led initiative that provides off-grid electricity to rural communities in developing countries. He also worked as a founding member of BBOXX, a company that manufactures and distributes solar home systems in Africa and Asia. After graduating, he pursued an MBA at Stanford University, where he met his co-founder Samuel Adeyemo, who shared his vision of making solar energy more accessible and affordable. Together, they decided to start Aurora Solar as a class project, inspired by their own frustrations with the existing tools and methods for solar design. They wanted to create a software solution that would simplify and streamline the entire process, from site assessment to installation, using advanced features such as remote shading analysis, performance simulation, and 3D modeling.

A Game-Changer for the Solar Industry

Aurora Solar is a cloud-based platform that allows solar professionals to design, sell, and deliver solar projects with ease and accuracy. It integrates with various data sources, such as satellite imagery, LiDAR, weather, and utility rates, to provide realistic and reliable information for optimal solar design. It also leverages artificial intelligence, computer vision, and machine learning to automate and enhance various tasks, such as roof detection, layout generation, and proposal creation. With Aurora Solar, solar professionals can save time and money, increase customer satisfaction, and grow their businesses. Aurora Solar has been recognized as a game-changer for the solar industry by various awards and accolades, such as the U.S. Department of Energy’s SunShot Award, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s validation, and the California Energy Commission’s approval. It has also been featured in prominent media outlets, such as Forbes, TechCrunch, and Bloomberg. Aurora Solar serves over 7,000 customers in more than 100 countries and has enabled the design of over 5 million solar projects worldwide.

Leading with Vision and Values

As the co-founder and CEO of Aurora Solar, Christopher Hopper is responsible for setting the vision and direction of the company, as well as overseeing its operations, strategy, and growth. He is also involved in product development, customer relations, and fundraising. He leads with a clear and compelling vision of making solar energy the dominant source of power in the world and a strong set of values that guide the company’s culture and decisions. These values include customer obsession, excellence, innovation, teamwork, and impact. Christopher Hopper believes that solar energy is not only a business opportunity but also a moral imperative. He is driven by a sense of purpose and passion to make a positive difference in the world and to inspire others to do the same.

The Future of Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development

Christopher Hopper is optimistic about the future of renewable energy and sustainable development. He thinks that solar energy is on the verge of becoming mainstream, as the costs continue to decline, the technology improves, and the demand increases. He also believes that solar energy can play a vital role in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which are a set of 17 global objectives to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all by 2030. He cites examples of how solar energy can contribute to these goals, such as providing access to affordable and clean energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, creating jobs and economic opportunities, empowering women and marginalized groups, and enhancing education and health outcomes. He also acknowledges some of the common misconceptions and challenges that solar energy faces, such as intermittency, grid integration, and policy barriers. He advocates for more research, innovation, and collaboration to overcome these obstacles and accelerate the transition to a renewable energy future.
