Scaling a network of anaerobic digesters is less a leap of imagination than a test of operations. Materials go in, energy comes out, and a great many details sit in between. That kind of challenge favors someone who has spent a career making complicated systems run well.
Michael O’Laughlin is that kind of leader. Since December 2024, he has served as Chief Executive Officer of Vanguard Renewables, bringing deep experience in operations, continuous improvement, and business expansion to the role.
A Mandate to Scale
Michael is direct about the assignment. In his own words: “I am excited to lead the Vanguard Renewables team to rapidly scale the national expansion of our organics-to-renewable-energy anaerobic digester portfolio and our environmental services platform.”
The mandate combines two connected businesses: an anaerobic digester portfolio that converts organic materials into renewable natural gas, and an environmental services platform supporting materials recycling and related customer needs. Scaling both nationally requires capital discipline, reliable site-level execution, and a team capable of reproducing success across new locations.
He describes the experienced Vanguard team as offering partners “innovative and collaborative solutions for materials recycling and renewable energy procurement.”
The push for scale has since produced a significant milestone. On October 1, 2026, Vanguard Renewables completed its acquisition of Generate Upcycle’s North American operations, expanding its network to 19 facilities across the United States and Canada. The combined platform has the capacity to process approximately 1.34 million tons of organic waste and produce 2.3 billion cubic feet of renewable natural gas annually.
A Foundation in Lean
The route to that chair ran through some of the most demanding operating environments in American industry.
It began at General Electric, where he worked in a series of operational roles. From July 2006 to January 2007, he was GE Aviation Development Inventory Stores Manager in Cincinnati, Ohio. From January to July 2007, he was Farm-Out Leader for sourcing in the Metro Jacksonville area, focused on P&L analysis and building a culture of continuous improvement.
From July 2007 to January 2008, he was Lean Lead in Rutland, Vermont. From January 2008 to January 2010, he was Manufacturing Operations Leader in Hooksett, New Hampshire. He then moved to Raytheon in Andover, Massachusetts, where he worked as Continuous Improvement and Lean Leader from February 2010 to June 2011.
Across GE and Raytheon, the pattern is consistent. Each role placed him close to inventory, sourcing, manufacturing floors, and the habits that make a factory improve over time.
Building Operations at Lydall
In June 2011, Michael joined Lydall, where he spent more than nine years. His first role was Director of Continuous Improvement, North America, which he held until June 2012.
He then became Director of Operations in Rochester, New Hampshire, from June 2012 to February 2014. From February 2014 to January 2018, he served as Vice President of Operations for Performance Materials, also based in Rochester.
Together, these roles moved him from continuous improvement to site-level operations and then to executive responsibility for Performance Materials.
Creating a New Business
In January 2018, the work changed shape. Michael became Vice President of Business Development for Performance Materials, based in Greater Boston, a position he held until October 2019.
Beginning in January 2018, he also served as Vice President of Advanced Solutions through October 2020, creating the Advanced Solutions business segment. The segment was charged with identifying, developing, and driving sales in adjacent markets, using both new and existing products. He led a team of business development, sales, marketing, and technical leaders and pushed them to bring opportunities to reality with speed.
The business development successes he lists are varied:
- New battery materials
- Aerospace and defense
- Aramid fiber-based nonwovens
- PPE, including facemasks
- Gas phase filtration
Alongside the new ventures, the Advanced Solutions team grew its Thermal Insulation product lines for both high- and low-temperature applications.
Leading at Kymera International
In October 2020, Michael joined Kymera International as Chief Operating Officer, a role he held until March 2023.
From January 2023 to December 2024, he served as President of the Engineered Materials Business Unit, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The two roles overlapped from January through March 2023.
The unit spans a wide portfolio: SCM Metal Products, ACuPowder, Telex Metals, Reading Alloys, AmeriTi, ECKA Granules in Germany, Australia, and the United States, Mepura and Non Ferum Kranj, SCM Metal Products in Suzhou, and Innobraze.
The names matter less than the scope. They show a leader accustomed to managing many brands, many sites, and several countries at once.
Why the Experience Fits the Mission
At first glance, a career spent in aviation, defense, performance materials, and engineered metals might seem far from renewable energy. A closer look suggests otherwise.
Lean leadership, sourcing, P&L analysis, and continuous improvement are the working vocabulary of any business that must scale reliably. Michael’s time creating Advanced Solutions at Lydall, where he pursued adjacent markets with speed, mirrors the expansion task now in front of him.
The circular economy will not be built on ideas alone. It also depends on operators who know how to run plants, manage teams, and grow businesses. At Vanguard Renewables, Michael O’Laughlin is applying that operational discipline to a growing network of organics-recovery and renewable-natural-gas projects.
The thread running through two decades of titles, from GE Aviation to Kymera to Vanguard, is the same: he approaches new challenges by improving systems, developing teams, and building operations that can grow without losing discipline.
