The Core Skill Every Leader Needs is Determination

Leading a team means dealing with problems, pressure, and setbacks that appear without notice. Determination is what keeps a leader moving through all of that. It’s the steady push to continue when things get tough and to make decisions even when the path isn’t clear.

Determination Is the Basic Day-to-Day Asset

Pressure is something leaders deal with all the time. Deadlines move. Plans fail. People need guidance. Determination helps them stay focused and get things done without hesitation. It keeps things moving forward, even when things are uncertain or not on track.

Take the case of small businesses during the 2008 crisis. Revenue plummeted, and the future was not looking certain. Determination became the rock upon which steady operations were built. Daily expense checks, elimination of unnecessary costs, and a conscious shift to new customer segments brought slow but real progress. Over time, the business stabilised and then expanded.

Still, many people think this mindset belongs only in the workplace. In reality, it applies to hobbies and downtime too. Thanks to how easy it is now to play online, more people spend their leisure hours on platforms, especially casino sites, where strategy matters. Poker is a good example, as this game demands discipline. Players can’t rely on luck alone. On the contrary, they need to focus, read patterns, manage risk, and stay calm when things don’t go their way. It’s the same core skill, just in a different setting.

Another good example is preparation for a long run. The first few weeks are rough. Progress is slow. But with clear goals and the routine, the routine builds strength. By race day, the hard work is visible. The lesson is simple: determination works everywhere. You don’t need motivation all the time; you just need to keep showing up.

No leader works alone. Determination spreads. When a manager is focused, especially during difficult times, others respond. It builds trust. A voice of consistency in uncertainty, a voice of plan in change; these things keep people going. One person’s work can change an entire team’s thinking.

Progress updates help. When a leader points out actual wins (solving a supply delay, hitting a key number), it reminds the team that their work is adding up. Over time, this shapes a culture that yields better results.

Determination also keeps frustration under control. And when things go wrong, good leaders don’t ignore them. They deal with them, solve them, and move on. They demonstrate how a setback is only part of the process. That mentality keeps energy up and prevents burnout.

Cultivating Determination: What Leaders Can Do

Determination isn’t something with which you are born. It’s built. If you’re only beginning, start with what you have already done. Think back to a hard win, perhaps a deal that went close to missing, or a team problem you solved. Write it down. When motivation dips, look at that moment.

Be specific with goals. Vague plans fall apart fast. Instead of get more business, say add three new clients by next quarter. Break it down, track the steps. Every little victory becomes part of your routine.

Find someone who will hold you to it: a mentor, a colleague, anyone who checks in. Not to push so much, but to keep things steady. Even monthly check-ins help.

And don’t run away from the tough stuff. Take on new or uncomfortable work. The more you do that, the less it rattles you next time. That edge becomes a skill.

Determination in Evolving Workplaces

The way we work has changed. Office setups have now expanded across cities and time zones. To lead in that space, determination takes on a new form. It means showing up when the cameras are off, following through on small things, and finding ways to build connections with people you rarely meet in person.

Technology continually shifts the roles. Automation replaces tasks; new ones emerge. Leaders who move with those changes (learning and adapting) make the difference. They don’t freeze. They move first.

And bigger issues aren’t going to slow down. Climate change, global uncertainty, and political changes all affect decision-making. Really determined leaders face these challenges. They don’t just protect the business, but also set themself as examples for others.
