Greenberg attended New York University and the College of Insurance (now part of St. John’s University, New York) but did not graduate from either. He started his career in the insurance industry in 1975 when he joined AIG, a multinational insurance corporation founded by his father, Maurice R. Greenberg. He rose through the ranks and held several senior management positions, including president and CEO of AIU Holdings, AIG’s foreign insurance organization, as well as CEO of AIG Far East, where he was based in Japan and Korea. He left AIG in 2000 and joined ACE in November 2001 as its vice chairman.

ACE was a global provider of property and casualty insurance, founded in 1985 by a group of 34 companies. Greenberg became the CEO of ACE in 2004 and the chairman in 2007. He led the company to grow and innovate, acquiring several other insurance companies along the way. In 2016, ACE acquired the Chubb Corporation, a renowned insurer with a history dating back to 1792, and adopted the Chubb name.
